Demetria Atkins arrived at GSSM with 31 years of teaching science coursework for grades eight through college-level. She has taught earth, general and physical science, biology, chemistry and physics at various levels, including applied, college-prep and AP.
During her teaching career, Atkins has participated in numerous science workshops, institutes and programs geared toward curriculum and professional development. She also has participated in several state science initiatives and committees.
Atkins has received several accommodations to validate her teaching ability such as the Tandy Technology Scholars Outstanding Teacher in 1994; the South Carolina Association of Chemistry Teachers Chemistry Teacher of the Year in 2002; the South Carolina Independent School Association Upper School Teacher of the Year in 2006; and the "Who's Who Among American High School Teachers" nominations in 1996, 1997, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Atkins is the mother of three children: Audis, a clinical trauma specialist at Charleston Area Medical Systems in Charleston, WV; Anna Lauren, a NC and SC licensed realtor/broker with Urban Realty in Charlotte; and Christopher, a senior at Florence Christian School.
