Celebrating the Chinese New Year
Friday, March 1, 2013 - 2:20pm
I was very surprised at the turnout for the Chinese festival at Coker College. Hidden behind the side curtains, I, along with seniors Ashmitha Thinagar and Joseph Park, watched as faculty, Coker students, and Govies filled up Watson's Theater. As Chinese II students, we were requested by Dr. Li to participate in the show. Ashmitha and I acted in a skit performed and memorized in Chinese with other Coker College students. Joseph performed a song that had both Chinese and English lyrics.
Dr. Li also hired professional Chinese acrobats from New York to perform. They were truly phenomenal, performing acts such as mask changing and the tango on the unicycle. There were also Chinese performers who showcased traditional dancers and songs. Being Chinese American, the Lunar New Year has always been a big deal for me and my family. Although I was not able to celebrate with my family this year, I was very grateful to have the opportunity to celebrate it at GSSM.
