Then and Now: Becoming a Real Govie

Thursday, September 27, 2012 - 11:03am

Wow! I cannot believe it is already nearly mid-term on a new year – heading into the 25th!! The new juniors are their usual adorable selves, but in contrast to the classes of the 90’s (and doesn’t that seem ancient?) they are both less well informed and have more knowledge. The difference is that what they know now is more eclectic and tied to their own interests, and what they knew then fell more into the category of common knowledge. Now I have to explain some of my jokes (OK, so they weren’t very funny anyway).  For those of you who have been away for a while there are major changes on the campus – it’s huge and gorgeous - and a great place for ultimate Frisbee. Way more than half of our students play an interscholastic sport – and we win a lot of the games. Computers and cell  phones are everywhere and the possibilities for wasted time are greater than ever.  However, the classes are still sufficiently demanding that they don’t, after all, waste too much time. The students are marvelously curious and interested in all manner of things. They are a diverse group who quickly blends into that fabulous creature we all  love – a real” Govie”.

GSSM is growing and changing  and sometimes that is hard to deal with; but you cannot be around the campus without feeling the excitement and vitality that comes with a fabulous group of new faculty, the always changing student body and the addition of economics and engineering as a part of our state wide programs. Come and see for yourself if your are near Hartsville, or check out the web site and be proud of the part each of you have played in making GSSM what it is today.
