A Pioneering Infusion of Innovation and Entrepreneurship
at the SC Governor's School for Science & Mathematics
Educating South Carolina's best and brightest high school students with
an eye to the state's
economic future has always been at the heart of
GSSM.
As it did more than 20 years ago when the school became the fourth of
its kind in the nation, GSSM once again is embarking on a new journey
that will drive innovation through the next generation of homegrown
scientists, engineers and business leaders.
THE INSTITUTE WILL
Inspire an entrepreneurial culture where innovation and team
collaboration are pivotal in successful enterprise.
Implement strategies for durable economic growth by driving innovation
through the next generation of homegrown scientists, engineers and
innovators.
Increase potential for high-tech economic development in SC and become a
national model for advanced high schools across the nation.
FACTS
GSSM formally launched its Economics & Finance Institute in early
2010. The School has laid the groundwork for its unique undertaking by
visiting nationally recognized business programs such as The Moore
School of Business, Stanford, Kellogg and the University of Virginia,
and hosting think-tank sessions among South Carolina's most successful
entrepreneurs.
A national search for a director of the Institute is under way with the
goal of having someone in place by Summer 2010.
Beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, the Institute's director will
work with existing GSSM faculty and curriculum advisers to infuse the
study of economics into current course offerings.
Simultaneously to the infusion, GSSM will develop new learning
opportunities designed to create a culture of entrepreneurial thinking
where science is examined through a for-profit lens.
Mastery of science and math will remain GSSM's core focus, but students
now will have an opportunity to master economics as it relates to
science through new courses, competitions, internships, team projects,
case studies, visiting entrepreneurs and more.
GSSM will cultivate lasting partnerships with major universities and
emerging businesses to develop a course of study with real-world
applications.
The Institute will be home to a Center for Innovation &
Entrepreneurship.
