Advanced LEGO Robotics

Do you already have some LEGO robotics experience, but want to learn more? If so, Advanced LEGO Robotics is for you! This course builds on the beginning LEGO robotics class. Eighth graders may take this course if they have taken the beginning LEGO robotics class during a previous camp. You may purchase the robot and kit for an additional fee.

Applied Forensic Science

Discover how to collect, analyze and extract useful information from audio, photographic and video evidence. Investigate how human biology affects the generation and perception of evidence. Apply what you've learned to clean up audio and video recordings using both commercial and professional forensic software, including Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0 and Acon Digital Media Acoustica (yours to keep after GoSciTech).

The Art of Web Design

Dive into the world of CSS, javascript and HTML to design and develop your own web page. Learn the basics of web page structure and design, as well as the tools that web designers use in the real world. This experience is perfect for students interested in graphic design, art, and web development & design. The course is flexible with respect to prior experience: all students are welcome!

Astrophysics

How do we know the mass of the Sun? What causes tides? How old is the Universe? How do stars change over time? We will collect information and use mathematical models to understand the laws that govern the Solar System, stars and galaxies. Students will learn graphing and calculation techniques and use planetarium software to gather data. If weather permits, we will spend a couple of nights observing outdoors.

Beginning LEGO Robotics

Wish you had a robot to help you with your chores? At GoSciTech, you will use the LEGO Mindstorms Robotics kit to build, test and program robots to accomplish various tasks (however, there is no guarantee it will be good at chores). If you wish to continue to the First LEGO League challenges, you may purchase the robot and kit by paying an additional kit fee.

Codes and Cryptography

Examine coding theory (transmitting or communicating data accurately) and cryptography (keeping information private). Explore public-key systems and many common ciphers. Investigate modern-day applications that involve error-correcting codes, including bar codes, CDs, financial transactions and digital television.

Control your Electronics

Do you love robotics, programming and circuits? If so, Electronics is for you! Learn how to program the Arduino microprocessor to become your alarm clock, or even sneak up on your friends or siblings to scare them! Learn how to program a light show, make scientific instruments and design home electronic art. Students will take home the Arduino microprocessor, along with small components to continue their explorations. Explore further here.

Creating Interactive Computer Simulations

Explore the world of computer simulations through Easy Java Simulations (EJS), a recently developed open source tool that allows users to create interactive computer simulations without any previous programming experience. After completing the course, students can continue to create and run simulations at home without purchasing costly software.

CSI-GSSM

Learn the tools and tricks of the trade used by real-world CSIs. Through hands-on experiences, field trips and guest speaking engagements, students will explore evidence collection and contamination, crime scene analysis, DNA and trace evidence, specialized lab equipment, ballistics and more.

Interested in engineering and technology? Learn how both are used to make various types of materials in our world. Engineers and inventors must learn to work within the playing field of established scientific laws that govern what can and cannot be done. Field Ecology of the Southern Appalachians

Take a hike in the Great Smoky Mountains and get a first-hand look at the ecology of the Southern Appalachians. Discover different mountain ecosystems and learn about the biotic and abiotic factors that influence the composition of an ecological community. Base camp will be located at a campground in Gatlinburg, TN.

Great Experiments of Classical Physics

Measure and analyze the physical world to learn its secrets while conducting some of the most important experiments in the world of physical science. Topics will include Galileo's theory of ballistics, Boyle's law, laser diffraction and the spectroscopy of stars.

GSSM - In the Crime Lab

Learn about current forensic laboratory techniques used to solve real crimes. Students will learn the basics of DUI testing, carbon monoxide poisoning, white powder analysis and DNA analysis. Several forensic cases will be investigated throughout the week. This course builds on the CSI-GSSM Class. Ninth graders must have taken CSI-GSSM during a previous camp before enrolling in this course.

How the Brain Reigns Supreme

Are you interested in learning how the brain enables us to perceive, think, feel and behave? If so, the field of neuropsychology is right up your alley. Discover how the human brain is both a wonderfully complex and marvelously mysterious organ. Learn how researchers design experiments to examine a range of topics like cooperation, imitation, love and deception. Explore state-of-the-art approaches to studying the brain's involvement in these constructs. Then take it to the next level and design your own experiments to answer questions that interest you.

Science, Law, and Trial Advocacy: Lawyering 101

Do you have a love for science, but also an interest in the world of law? Explore the intersection of these topics, along with potential law careers for those with a scientific background. In this course, you will research ethical and legal controversies surrounding cutting-edge discoveries. Become lawyers, witnesses, and jury members in interactive mock trials.
