Sarah Spruill, GSSM '93, was recently named shareholder at Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, a Columbia-based law firm that specializes in commerce, technology, insurance, education, healthcare, government and public relations.
Spruill, who has been with the firm since 2002, said that law has not only allowed her to follow in her family's footsteps but also to pursue a great adventure.
"Being named shareholder is exciting," Spruill said. "It's nice to see hard work pay off!"
Spruill earned her bachelor's degree in history at the University of South Carolina and continued on to USC's School of Law where she earned her degree in 2000. Despite a great experience at USC, she said it was her GSSM high school experience that left her with many wonderful memories of friendships, made both inside and outside the classroom.
"It's the only time in my life where my only job was to be smart and to talk to other smart people," she said.
Raised in Cheraw S.C., Spruill saw GSSM as a place for additional opportunity and growth. She said that in addition to the camaraderie among her peers, she also learned an abundance of critical skills from the faculty.
In fact, she said the most valuable lesson GSSM taught her was the basics of problem solving --- recognize the problem, get information needed to solve the problem and then report the useful information --- a method she still uses today in her career and daily life.
On her advice to GSSM's 2009 senior class she said, "GSSM gives you all the tools you need to do well in college, so just remember to have a good time."
Spruill is looking forward to a bright future at Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd. "I work for a great firm with great lawyers and interesting cases. Law isn't something you do just 'cause you can't find something better to do. Law is great because it gives you the ability to help people, which can be very rewarding."
