March 21, 2007
Cory Gresham, class of 2000 graduate of the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, recently was named an "Amazing Student" at the University of Georgia in Athens.
Gresham, originally from Georgetown County, is one of the first two students admitted to the Veterinary Medical Scientist Training Program (D.V.M./Ph.D.) at UGA's College of Veterinary Medicine. He works in the area of comparative medicine, with specific emphasis on developing and applying aquatic animal models relevant to human disease.
For his undergraduate work, Gresham was a double-major (genetics and microbiology) honors student at UGA, and more recently completed his second year of veterinary school.
For his Ph.D. work, Gresham was awarded a prestigious university-wide graduate assistantship for two years. He recently returned from a trip to Africa where he worked in the field of improved diagnostics for brucellosis. After an anticipated graduation year of 2011, Gresham plans to continue working in pharmaceutical comparative medicine and wants to continue his research in Africa.
