GSSM Foundation Receives $5,000 Grant from Self Family Foundation
February 18, 2007
The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) Foundation has received a $5,000 grant from the Self Family Foundation. This generous contribution will benefit the School's Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI) - a graduation requirement for all GSSM students.
SPRI is a statewide outreach program designed to pair GSSM's academically talented students with scientist mentors in research and development labs across the state for a six-week internship in a variety of fields including biomedical, nanotechnology and alternative fuels engineering. Non-GSSM students from other public, private or homeschooled settings also are encouraged to participate following a detailed application process.
"The Self Family Foundation is proud to support the internship program for outstanding students from the Greenwood area. We believe this is a wise investment in the future of South Carolina," stated Frank Wideman, president of the Self Family Foundation.
James C. Self, founder of Greenwood Mills, established the Self Family Foundation in 1942. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed more than $60 million to improving the quality of life for the citizens of South Carolina.
