Friday, January 25, 2013 - 9:52am
All four of the students from the Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) who auditioned for SC Region Band were accepted. Auditions were held on January 12 at West Florence High School in Florence, SC. Students will participate in the Region (5) Band Clinic on February 22-23 at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, SC.
GSSM senior Rachel Chen, daughter of Feng Chen & Xi Wang of Central, earned first chair flute. Junior Gina Song, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Soo Chan Song of Greenville, earned sixth chair flute. Junior Andrew Shore, son of Lori & Steve Shore of Greenville, earned tenth chair trombone. Junior Michael Tuten, son of April & Mike Tuten of Lexington, earned first chair alto sax.
Chen, Song and Tuten have been invited to audition for All-State Band on January 26, 2013 at Lexington High School in Lexington, SC. Students will be competing against Region Band students from across the state for placement in All-State Band.
GSSM students prepared for their auditions during the school's January Interim session, a two-week mini-mester of elective courses. The Music Performance Interim course was taught by GSSM staff members Ernie Boyd and Miranda Easterling, who were joined by Coker College faculty member, Dr. Graham Wood.
"GSSM students are multi-dimensional and multi-talented ... in academics, sports and definitely music. They also share a most important trait: the willingness to work hard," says Ernie Boyd, GSSM Band Director and CFO. "GSSM musicians are incredible - finding time amongst challenging academics to play, entertain and advance their musicianship. We have a vibrant musical community that includes Jazz Band, Concert Band, Chorus, Orchestra - and our All-State auditioners demonstrate the high level of our students' music involvement."
