GSSM Students Set to Move Onto Campus August 16 and 19
August 9, 2007
Moving away from home and into a dorm for the first time can be a frightening experience, especially if you are only 15 years old. On August 16, 64 of South Carolina's best and brightest high school juniors will move to their new home at the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) campus in Hartsville. A few days later, on August 19, 64 rising seniors will move back to campus, too.
"Most parents hope or expect that their children will go to college one day, but not many expect their children to move out two years before high school graduation," said Emily Pettit, Director of Student Services at GSSM. "We are excited to welcome our junior class of 2009. These students and their families will join what we call the 'Govie Family'."
GSSM alumni will be on-hand to provide refreshments and boarding school survival tips. One-on-one interviews with students will be available, as will photo opportunities.
A public, residential high school for academically talented and motivated juniors and seniors, GSSM offers college-level courses and hands-on curriculum with a special focus on science, math, technology and research.
