Demetria Atkins Named Outreach Coordinator for GSSM

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Demetria Atkins to its Outreach Center staff as Coordinator for Professional Development & SC GEAR UP.
Atkins has been a South Carolina science teacher for 31 years, teaching grades eight through college-level courses such as earth, general and physical science, biology, chemistry and physics at various levels including applied, college-prep and Advanced Placement.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education-Natural Sciences from Clemson University and her Masters of Education in Science from Francis Marion University.
Atkins will serve as the GSSM liaison for SC GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) to establish professional development experiences for middle and high school science teachers.
SC GEAR UP is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the state of South Carolina and the South Carolina business community.
Atkins, a Darlington resident, is the mother of three: Audis, a clinical trauma specialist at Charleston Area Medical Systems in Charleston, WV; Anna Lauren, a NC and SC licensed realtor/broker with Urban Realty in Charlotte; and Christopher, a senior at Florence Christian School.
