The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) will hold its Convocation on Thursday, September 13, 2 p.m., to award academic letters to returning seniors and welcome incoming juniors.

Convocation will feature keynote speaker The Honorable John Spratt, member of the United States House of Representatives, serving the people of the Fifth District of South Carolina.

First elected to Congress in 1982, Spratt is Chairman of the Budget Committee and has been a leader in helping to shape the federal budget. One of his proudest accomplishments is the Balanced Budget Agreement in 1997, which put the federal budget in surplus for the first time in 30 years.

Spratt also is the second ranking Democrat on the Armed Services Committee. He serves on three subcommittees: Oversight and Investigations, Strategic Forces and Air and Land Forces. In addition to his committee work, Spratt co-chairs the Textile Caucus, the Bearing Caucus and the Nuclear Energy Caucus.
