Three GSSM Alumni Publish Article in Biophysical Journal
November 7, 2007
Three South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) alumni recently co-authored an article featured in the November 2007 issue of the Biophysical Journal.
The article, titled "Optimization of Electrostatic Interactions in Protein-Protein Complexes," was co-authored by Kelly Brock, Kemper Talley and Kacey Coley, all members of the GSSM graduating Class of 2007. They worked in Dr. Emil Alexov's Computational Biophysics and Bioinformatics Laboratory at Clemson University, under his leadership and that of Dr. Petras Kundrotas, both of whom are co-authors.
The article presented a statistical analysis of the electrostatic properties of 298 protein-protein complexes and 356 domain-domain structures extracted from the previously developed database of protein complexes.
The published article is the result of the graduates' participation in GSSM's Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI) at Clemson University during Summer 2006. SPRI is a statewide outreach program designed to pair GSSM's academically talented students with scientist mentors in research and development labs across the state for a six-week internship.
Brock, of Greenwood, is the daughter of Linda Brock and is a freshman at Harvard University; Talley, of Easley, is the son of Wayne and Cindy Talley and is a freshman at Clemson University; and Coley, of Aiken, is the son of Kevin Coley and Casonya O'Neal and is a freshman at Clemson University.
