GSSM Accepting Applications for SSP
May 2, 2008
Rising 8th, 9th and 10th grade students from across the state and qualified applicants from out-of-state are invited to spend their summer studying math, science and technology at the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM.)
The Summer Science Program (SSP) brings students to the GSSM campus for their choice of three week-long camps (June 15-21; June 22-28; and July 6-12) emphasizing field trips and hands-on lab work with professors from a variety of South Carolina colleges and universities as well as GSSM faculty.
SSP course offerings include robotics, chemistry, mathematical challenges with and without graphing calculators, crime scene investigation, physics, field ecology, marine science, plant biology, digital electronics, web-page creation, immunology, and mathematical forensic science. For the second year, a course in robotics will be offered to rising 8th graders.
To be accepted, students must have proven interest and abilities in science and mathematics, demonstrated through test scores and grades. The cost of each program varies depending on materials, but the tuition averages less than $600 for each week-long session. Some need-based scholarships are available.
Interested students should visit www.scgssm.org/ssp for course descriptions and to apply online or call 843.383.3958 for specifics on classes, tuition and scholarships. The SSP application and financial aid application deadlines are May 15.
