GSSM Student Artwork Featured in National Art Education Association Convention

April 23, 2008

Artwork created by students at the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) was featured in the Youth Art Month presentation at the the 2008 National Art Education Association Convention held in New Orleans March 26-30.

Sponsored by The Council for Art Education, Youth Art Month is an annual nationwide observance held to emphasize the value of art and art education for all students and to encourage public support for quality school art programs.

The artwork, created by GSSM students, took place during the School's long-running January Interim course known as "Wachovia's Art in the Interim." During this course, visiting artist, Patz Fowle, worked with the students in various mediums such as sculpture and painting.

Fowle, a member of the National Art Education Association, was delighted that GSSM was one of two schools that represented the state of South Carolina during the powerful art advocacy presentation, "Make Art a Priority - Express Yourself."

"It was a real honor to have GSSM represent South Carolina's high school art programs during the dynamic visual presentation Make Art a Priority- Express Yourself celebrating Youth Art Month at the 2008 National Art Education Association Convention," said Fowle. "It always is amazing to see how creative the students at GSSM can be, but I am never surprised at their level of success because of their curious and ambitious nature."
