Spartanburg District 7 and the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) are joining forces to bring the popular summer enrichment program, Camp Invention, to third through sixth graders at Cleveland Elementary School.
Funded by the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Foundation, this unique day camp, which runs June 15-19, aims to foster creativity, teamwork, inventive thinking and science literacy among its 60 participants, all of whom are enrolled at Cleveland Elementary, and who will attend the camp free of charge. Campers will collaborate on various projects where they'll learn about scientific concepts including buoyancy, probability, statistics and more.
"This is truly an exciting moment in our ongoing pursuit of excellence," said Dr. Thomas White, Spartanburg District 7 superintendent. "The aspirations created within our students through exposure to Camp Invention and the Governor's School will serve them well in their quest for academic achievement and lifelong learning."
While GSSM has hosted Camp Invention in the past, officials said this is the first time the school has collaborated on the summer program with an elementary school.

"Camp Invention is a terrific way to introduce the young people of Cleveland Elementary to the fun and excitement of creating wonderful things with science and math," said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president. "Maybe we'll encounter a future head of NASA like General Charles Bolden in the bunch. We certainly hope to find a future Governor's School student."
Camp Invention got its start in 1990 as an education outreach program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation in Akron, Ohio, with support from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. By 1995, the program was nationwide. Popular in schools and museums across the country, the program has received rave reviews from participating educators, parents and children ─ giving it an approval rating of more than 90 percent.
"The Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Foundation is thrilled and honored to be a supporter of this new partnership between Spartanburg's own Cleveland Elementary School and South Carolina's nationally celebrated Governor's School," said Sheila Breitweiser, executive director and vice president.
"What's more, this hands-on summer program is a great way to introduce science in a fun and inspiring way to the future scientists, doctors, nurses and other medical personnel who may help to serve as tomorrow's healthcare providers in our own community."
