GSSM Foundation Receives Gift from Food Lion

October 29, 2009

The S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) Foundation has received $500 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation. GSSM will use the gift to support technology for the school's physics lab.

"Collecting and entering data using computers is the normal practice of scientists these days and we want our students to be well-versed in these skills," said Dr. Mark Godwin, GSSM physics instructor. "We're grateful to Food Lion's generosity, which ensures that we can continue to offer the technology-centered labs vital to our students' success."

The funds will help to purchase laptops designed to enhance advanced studies in physics, both for the school's residential educational program and for GSSM's annual outreach camps offered through its Summer Science Program (SSP).

With more access to technology, students can perform weekly physics labs with more efficiency, accuracy and depth, focusing on how to correctly collect and analyze data, and develop and print graphs and tables to illustrate findings.
