GSSM Senior Earns State's ONLY Perfect ACT Score for September

November 5, 2009

Millie Griffin, a senior at the S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM), has achieved a perfect score of 36 on the ACT exam. Griffin is the only S.C. student who achieved a perfect score in September's test period.

According to ACT officials, less than 1/10th of one percent of all test takers receive the top score of 36.

"It's really great when a fine, young woman like Millie chooses to apply her talents to the fullest to achieve great things," said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president.

"We at GSSM are not at all surprised by her accomplishment.  All the credit goes to Millie and to her family. We're very proud of her."

Griffin, who also is a National Merit semifinalist, is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joe Asa Griffin III of Florence. She attended Trinity Collegiate School prior to being accepted to GSSM.

This past summer Griffin worked in the Department of Neuroscience at the Medical University of South Carolina as an intern conducting research on toxins and cell death in an effort to determine possible causes of Alzheimer's disease.

In 2008, 1.5 million students took the ACT, a national college admissions test that consists of subject area tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. The test includes 215 multiple-choice questions and a 30-minute writing test.
