GSSM Receives Grant from Jerry and Anita Zucker Family Endowment Fund

February 2, 2010

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Jerry and Anita Zucker Family Endowment Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of SC, to support residential financial aid for its students.

Every year, GSSM, a public, residential high school in Hartsville, serves 128 high-achieving juniors and seniors from across the state who are passionate about science, mathematics and technology and who are motivated to increase their knowledge in these subject areas. Of these students, more than 20 percent request financial assistance.

"The Jerry & Anita Zucker Family Endowment congratulates GSSM on receiving this grant, which will help ensure that academically qualified students will not have to decline acceptance due to financial constraints," said Edie Blakeslee, senior program director for  Coastal Community Foundation of SC.

A private foundation, the Jerry and Anita Zucker Family Endowment Fund provides support to organizations furthering education, human needs and the preservation of Jewish culture with primary emphasis in South Carolina.

As a public high school, GSSM does not charge tuition. The school, however, does have a $1,200 fee for each student, which is applied directly to the cost of a meal plan.

"We are grateful that the Zucker family endowment shares our concern for ensuring that every child with the ability and commitment to excel in science and mathematics has the opportunity to do so regardless of the financial circumstances of his or her family," said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president.

"The fee that GSSM charges to cover meals is small, but even so, some students would be unable to attend our great school without this aid.  Simply put, no student will ever be turned away for financial reasons."
