Four Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) 2010 graduates have been named Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship recipients by the South Carolina Department of Education. They join 102 students from across the state in earning the award, which promotes academic excellence using federal funds."I'm very proud of these outstanding students," said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president. "Selection for a Byrd Scholarship recognizes not only their individual academic success to date but also their future potential."
"All four are exceptional young people, with a strong commitment to service as well as to excellence, and our state and nation have every reason to expect a lifetime of outstanding accomplishment from them. This scholarship money is truly well spent."
In addition to 2010's new recipients, the program is funding 304 continuing scholarship students. The program is administered by the state education agency, using an annual allocation from the U.S. Department of Education. Federal funds amounted to $594,000 including both new and continuing stipends, according to the state Education Department.
The scholarship program is named for the late U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia and is designed to recognize exceptional high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education.
Located in Hartsville, the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics is a public, two-year early college experience for academically talented and motivated juniors and seniors.
