Thanks to $275,000 in federally appropriated funds, GSSM can expand its outreach program through the launch of this innovative Readiness Initiative designed to prepare middle schoolers for entrance into GSSM and for the careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
The program will begin with a 100-student cohort of rising eighth graders that will participate in a one-week session during summer 2011. Each year, the program will expand by one week until it reaches four weeks during the summer following the students’ sophomore year. During the final year of the program, students will participate in summer research and complete follow-up sessions.
For five consecutive summers, students will live on the GSSM campus in Hartsville and engage in science, technology, engineering and mathematics while fine-tuning their critical thinking and writing skills and developing their leadership abilities.Students who complete the program and meet GSSM admission requirements will be accepted to GSSM’s residential program for their junior and senior years of high school, with college admission and scholarships all but guaranteed.
