Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI) Scholars
Trade in your summer job for a scientific experience of a lifetime.
What is the Summer Program for Research Interns, or SPRI?
-
SPRI is a statewide outreach program designed to pair academically talented students with scientist mentors in research and development labs across the state for a six-week internship.
- Students conduct research on new-or-existing projects in areas such as astronomy, biochemistry, molecular biology, computer science, engineering, physics, microbiology, zoology and more.
- More than 600 mentors at 85 institutions have volunteered their time to guide more than 1,600 students in serious scientific research over the past 20 years.
How do I apply?
- Students from public, private or home school settings are encouraged to apply to become an SPRI Scholar.
- Applicants must be SC residents and rising high school seniors who are at least 16 years of age by June of the summer in which they plan to participate.
- The fee for residential scholars is $2,400. Scholars will live in dorms on the campuses of the research institutes where they will conduct research. The fee for non-residential scholars is $1,200. There is a limited amount of financial assistance available.
- Depending on location and scientific interest, interns conduct research at a number of institutions including the University of South Carolina, Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina, Furman University and the Savannah River National Laboratory, just to name a few.
- Following their six-week internship, SPRI Scholars must submit a formal abstract and present their work at the GSSM annual Research Colloquium in February 2012.
