SSP FOR RISING TENTH GRADERS

Second Week: June 22-28
Challenge for the Mathematically Capable and Curious, Emphasizing Geometry - 10D

DRS. NANCY AND TERRY LONG, both retired GSSM instructors, describe their course this way:  “If you’re eager to delve into the riches of mathematics beyond your current math class, come join us and discover the fields of logic, combinatorics, probability, expected value, set theory and complex numbers, with an emphasis on geometry. The course will use a TI-83 Plus graphing calculator, which will be yours to keep.  No previous knowledge of this instrument is expected, and each day will include tech time to teach calculator skills.”  Prerequisite: completion of an honors course in Geometry with a grade of B or higher.  Tuition $625

The Drs. Long (each of whom holds AB, Indiana University; MS, Univ. of Wisconsin-Superior; PhD, Univ. of Southern Mississippi) both taught mathematics at GSSM before their recent retirements.  Prior to joining the GSSM faculty, they taught mathematics in the state of Florida. Both have mentored several state and national math competitions via the national mathematics organization, Mu Alpha Theta. Dr. Nancy Long’s other interests include bicycling, tennis, calligraphy, reading, and observing wildlife. While Dr. Terry Long shares his wife’s interest in bicycling, tennis, and observing wildlife, he is also an avid runner. Their research interest lies in the area of teaching mathematics to gifted students.
