Chemistry - 9B
DR. CHRISTINA McCARTHA, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Newberry College in Newberry, will guide her students in exploring different topics in chemistry. The students will investigate the chemistry of adhesives, dyes, and polymers through experiments in the laboratory. Also included in the course will be opportunities to explore experimental design, paint with polymers, use inkodyes to make a T-shirt, prepare Gak, Slime, Superballs, and lots of other fun things! Dr. McCartha (BS, Univ. of South Carolina; PhD, Emory University) joined the Newberry College faculty in 2002. During her studies at USC, she was honored with the Outstanding Chemistry Undergraduate Award of the American Institute of Chemists. Subsequently she was recognized with the Emory University Women's Club Research Award. After receiving her doctorate, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Chemistry at Emory University for four years. Her outside interests include being a Girl Scout leader. If you really want to see her ears perk up, she says, ask about her four children. RESEARCH: polyoxometalates, catalysis, and innovations in chemical education.
