DR. SID PARRISH, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Newberry College in Newberry, is offering an introduction to the field of forensic science that specifically deals with the terminology, techniques and procedures used in collecting and analyzing evidence for use in legal proceedings. Topics will include evidence collection and contamination, crime scene analysis, laboratory equipment, DNA evidence, trace evidence, gunshot and bullet evidence and other contemporary topics. Most of this course will be spent in hands-on activities so each student will gain the real-life experience of a trained CSI. This course will also include guest speakers and field trips that will enhance the student's appreciation of Crime Scene Investigation. Tuition $535
Dr. Parrish (B.S., Furman University; M.S., Ph.D., University of Florida) is a native of Orlando, Florida. After teaching 5 years at a Lutheran school in Fremont, Nebraska, he returned to South Carolina to become director of the Chemical Forensics program at Newberry College. Although this program is only in its third year, it is already gaining regional attention. His hobbies include golf, hiking and training his dog to be able to go to hospitals and nursing homes to help with physical therapy or just to brighten someone's day.
