Plant Biology

SSP FOR RISING NINTH GRADERS

Third Week: July 6-12
Plant Biology - 9O

DR. FLORENCE ANORUO, Assistant Professor of Biology at Claflin University in Orangeburg, will introduce students to the identification and classification of common and unusual plant species.  In particular, her students will study DNA analysis of one of the most widespread plant species.  Students will also extract and analyze essential oils and common pigments from a number of plant species using a spectrophotometer.  Her class will examine “underground friendly neighbors,” the symbiotic relationship between plant roots, fungi and nitrogen-fixing bacteria.  Dr. Anoruo adds, "One highlight of our week's adventure is the nature walk through beautiful Kalmia Gardens to explore representative habitats common in the Southeast."  Tuition $515

Dr. Anoruo (BS, Southern Connecticut State University; MS, SC State Univ.; PhD Univ. of South Carolina) has been teaching at Claflin University for eight years.  Her hobbies include tennis and walking.  RESEARCH:  phyto/bioremediation, plant microbial interaction, and chemical ecology, specifically focused on the defensive, physiological, and ecological roles of phytochemicals. Chemically mediated intra- and inter-species interactions and the allelopathic potential of native and non-native plant species are also investigated.
