Robotics - Week 2
SSP FOR RISING EIGHTH GRADERS
Week of July 6-12
SSP Robotics - 8B
MRS. ELIZABETH BUNN, computer science and engineering teacher at GSSM, will introduce rising 8th graders to the fun of solving real-world problems by applying math, science, and technology to robotics. During the course her students will use the Lego Mindstorms Education NXT Base Set and Education Resource Set to build, test and program robots to accomplish tasks similar to those presented by First Lego League (FLL) team competitions. Students will learn how to construct and program robots to perform basic behaviors using motors and rotation and a variety of sensors. The NXT block, which contains a 32-bit processor, enables the students to write programs and download them to the robot. The course combines hands-on problem-solving and collaboration with positive role models in an educational context. These kits, which they will be able to take home afterwards, provide everything, except a computer, needed to continue FLL activities in their homes and schools. Tuition $795
Mrs. Bunn (BS, MA, MS, Clemson Univ.) came to GSSM in 1993 from Cleveland State University (Ohio) where she taught in the Computer Science Department. She has also taught computer science at East Tennessee State University, worked as a software engineer with Texas Instruments in Tennessee and Texas, and taught math for six years in Atlanta and Greenville. She teaches computer science, engineering and robotics at GSSM and is the coach of the First Tech Robotics team. She has taught such diverse courses as digital editing, criminology, and non-Euclidean geometry during the GSSM interim semester. She and her husband have three sons, two in college. Her favorite pastimes are gardening, reading, and camping in our state and national parks.
