Dr. Hector E. Flores
Dr. Hector E. Flores is the President of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) since April 15, 2016. Dr. Flores joined GSSM after a career of over thirty years in higher education, both as faculty, researchers, and academic administrators. Before moving to Hartsville, SC, Dr. Flores was Dean of Graduate studies at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) since 2011. He has also served as faculty and administrators At Louisiana State University, The Pennsylvania State University, Arkansas State University, and Texas State University. Dr. Flores earned his bachelor's degree in biology from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru, one of the two oldest universities in the New World (1665). Dr. Flores earned M. Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Biology from Yale University and a master’s degree in Horticulture from the University of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Flores is the author of over 100 technical manuscripts in his area of expertise, plant biology and the biochemistry of plant roots. He has also edited 5 books in his area of expertise, and secured about $10 M in Federal and Foundation grants as PI and Co-PI. He has advised numerous high schools, undergraduate M.S. and Ph.D. students. At Penn State, he was Honors faculty in the then newly created Schreyer Honors College, as part of which he conducted Spring break trips to South America for 7 years. He also created a popular Honors course titled Seeds of Changes: the Biology and Culture of Plant-People Interactions. He has established many consortia, particularly international partnerships.
Dr. Flores has a strong interest in and commitment to the education of minority students, and looks forward to applying many years of experience in diversity recruiting to attracts a diverse populations of students from across the State to the residential, Accelerate and outreach programs. He is also strongly committed to creating a truly multicultural campus and institution. In addition to his research accomplishments, Dr. Flores has served in numerous professional societies and as a science consultant to the U.S. State Department. He has given over 200 presentations including keynote addresses, at national and international conferences. He also served as program director for the National Science Foundation.
Having been born and raised in Lima, Peru, close to the ocean, Dr. Flores looks forward to getting to know South Carolina's beautiful coast and enjoy the fishing and the beaches. In his spare time, Dr. Flores has moonlighted as a jazz DJ. He also plays the piano and writes poetry.
At GSSM, as Head of a SC State agency, Dr. Flores is ultimately responsible for all the operations of the school. Among other things, Dr. Flores is responsible for engaging with the legislature, making the case for GSSM support from State and other sources, personnel management, leadership team management, and overseeing every aspect of GSSM's function, from personnel matters to strategic planning, academics, enrollment management, internal and external relationships with all stakeholders. Dr. Flores oversees the residential, outreach and Accelerate programs. Dr. Flores reports to the GSSM Board of Trustees, which is the governing body of the school.
