Govies are Back to School!
GSSM residential students moved in to the residence hall last week, and classes are in full swing! This year, GSSM welcomed the largest junior class in its history: 158 students representing 30 counties and 80 high schools across South Carolina.
Additionally, GSSM welcomed 67 new students into its Accelerate and TEAM UP virtual engineering programs, and 12 students joined the pilot year of the new STEM Foundations online diploma program.
Welcome back, Govies! Have an amazing year!
Exploring STEM All Summer
This summer, over 820 students participated in GSSM STEM camps residentially on our Hartsville campus, in person at partner schools in Charleston, Georgetown, and Orangeburg counties, and online! Driven by GSSM's commitment to hands-on, experiential learning, students from across South Carolina were immersed in a single STEM topic during the camp week. Through projects, experiments, and group activities, they improved their understanding of STEM concepts and their real-world applications while developing STEM skills such as problem solving, teamwork and collaboration, innovation, critical thinking, and communication.
Some highlights from participating students:
- “It was an overall amazing experience that increased my interest in Chemistry and a career path in chemistry in the future.”
- “I loved the interactive part of the class. Whereas math is usually confined to pencil and paper, my teacher integrated many creative and exciting activities that brought the math to life. For example, we created a Möbius strip as a class that offered a different perspective on one-sided shapes.”
- “This was a great time for everyone to have fun and learn a lot about engineering. I would like to say thank you so much.”
