Govies Give Back to Hartsville

Community engagement is a big part of Govie life. GSSM students, faculty, and staff have volunteered with Darlington County Habitat for Humanity for several years, and this month marked the completion of the fifth house built with Govie assistance. Building homes challenges students with practical applications of their lessons in mathematics, physics, and engineering while providing a respite from the pressures of school. Students also gain first-hand experience with turning plans into reality under the guidance of experienced construction managers. GSSM thanks Darlington County Habitat for Humanity for allowing our students to give back to the Hartsville community!

Celebrating Youth in Government

GSSM's Youth in Government club recently participated in the annual Model Legislature & Court Conference, and it was our most successful one ever! More than 1,600 students from across South Carolina gathered in Columbia to learn how to solve community problems through the democratic process as well as debate and discuss issues with their peers from throughout South Carolina. All of our bills were passed and signed into law, and our Student Council President, Patricio Ortiz '20, served as YIG Governor during the conference. Additionally, the delegation took home several awards:

  • Premier Delegation Award
  • Mock Trial First Place Team: Lili Fonteneau '21, Maura Hilbourn '21, Zeke McDavid '20, Randi Jennings '20, and Grace Lindsay '20
  • Mock Trial Award for Outstanding Witness: Zeke McDavid '20
  • Fritz Hollings Memorial Award (a scholarship recognizing exemplary character, performance, and leadership): Christian Dunlap '20
  • Outstanding Bill Award: Christian Dunlap '20 and Rajath Sivankoil '20
