GSSM's New Classroom Technology

Once again, GSSM is ahead of the curve! Well before the coronavirus pandemic forced the School to transition to fully virtual operations this spring, GSSM was already in the process of replacing and updating the technology in its classrooms. The new technology provides flexibility to create a classroom experience that best serves students in the hybrid environment and fits the teacher's subject and teaching style.

Each classroom has at least three cameras: a lecture-capture camera that provides remote students a wide view of the teaching area; one in the front of the classroom to provide remote students and guest speakers a view of the students in the classroom; and a fully adjustable multipurpose camera that can provide a wide view of the classroom or a close-up view of the objects being studied.

Projectors and smart boards were replaced with wall-mounted 86" 4K interactive flat panels with Zoom and whiteboard applications built in. Teachers can show and manipulate content from their computers on these panels, and students in the classroom can display their screens by casting wirelessly to the panels. Additionally, each classroom has a cart-mounted 55" panel so students and teachers in the classroom can position it to best see and communicate with remote students.

Teachers use wireless lapel microphones so they can be heard by all students. Microphones associated with each camera facilitate discussion between classroom and remote participants. GSSM is currently piloting a sound steering microphone array backed up by digital signal processors in two classrooms this fall to enhance the sound quality for remote learners, with plans to apply similar setups to other classrooms for the spring semester.
