Alumni Spotlight: Convocation Speaker Joey Wilson '13 and 2019 Outstanding Alumnus Dr. Nathan Kwan '04

GSSM celebrated the beginning of the school year with its annual Convocation Ceremony on September 12, 2019. As part of the festivities, two alumni spoke to the current students and encouraged them that there is life after GSSM.

The Convocation address was given by Joey Wilson '13 (right), an oncology Ph.D. student at the University of Cambridge in England. Joey shared his experiences—the successes and the failures—at GSSM and as an undergraduate at Clemson University, saying, "Leaving home is hard. Being put in an academically challenging environment while reshaping your life as you know it is even harder. But it is in transition where we truly grow. GSSM turned out to be a positive experience that truly brought out the best in me."

Dr. Nathan Kwan '04 (middle) received the 2019 Outstanding Alumnus Award, which is presented annually by the GSSM Alumni Association to a person who, through their post-GSSM education, work, and personal endeavors, exemplifies the success one can achieve through the foundation of a GSSM education. Nathan, who currently serves in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a flight surgeon, advised students, "Never stop being a learner. Learn from your professors, your wins, your losses, and, mostly importantly, learn from each other."
