So you’re getting ready to start your application to GSSM…You’re reading through the website and you come across Preview Day, SPRI, RESP, RAs, SmartTalks, and Long Weekends. What does it all mean?!
Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.
Check out this list of terms and acronyms that every prospective student (and parent) should know:
Ambassadors: GSSM Ambassadors represent the school during tours and special events. They guide campus tours for interested students and parents (like you!) and assist with GSSM’s Preview Days in the fall and winter.
Community Engagement: Community service done while at GSSM. Students are required to complete 50 hours (but they can always do more!).
Houses of GSSM: That’s right, houses. Kind of like Hogwarts, only replace magic with STEM. GSSM has six different houses, which help students develop community values, instill a sense of belonging, and promote school spirit through healthy competition. Watch a video about GSSM’s House System.
January Interim: For three weeks before the second semester begins, students at GSSM participate in a mini semester where they focus on one elective course. Interim allows you to explore a wide variety of course offerings and tap into undiscovered talents and explore new hobbies. Interested? Check out this year’s courses!
LWE: Long weekend! A regularly scheduled weekend during which students can return home to spend time with parents and friends. LWE’s start after students’ last class of Thursday and ends no later than 7 p.m. on Sunday.
OCCA: The Office of College Counseling and Advising. They’re there to provide guidance and support during your college search and application process. The personalized approach to the college counseling process assists students in discovering colleges that are a good “fit” for each student. Read more.
Preview Day: Tour the school, meet faculty, staff, and students, and take part in informational panels as you find out if GSSM is right for you! Preview Days are one of the best ways to get a feel for what GSSM is all about. This year’s Preview Days are scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2017, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Monday, January 15, 2018, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Learn more and Register!
RA: Full-time, live-in, professional staff members in the Student Development Division who provide students with guidance for everyday living. They are responsible for directing, counseling, and supervising the students, particularly in areas of non- academic development. They provide emotional support, social and recreational opportunities, set guidelines for acceptable behavior, interpret and enforce school policies, respond to problems and conflicts, and administer discipline when necessary.
RLC: Part-time, live-in staff, local college students, chosen for their maturity and their ability to act as a role model to our students. The Resident Assistants’ primary responsibilities are to establish a one-on-one relationship with each member of their community, along with providing a number of educational, social, cultural, etc. programs for the students.
Shadow Day: Shadow Days let you visit GSSM during the academic week and shadow an actual student. You’ll go to class with them, meet teachers, and eat lunch in the dining hall. Shadows days are offered to students who have completed or will complete the student portion of the application by February 1, 2018. Shadow Days began on September 18, so sign up for one today!
SmartTalk: Our representatives are traveling across the state to bring you SmartTalks - local informational sessions about GSSM.
SPRI & RESP: Every student at GSSM participates in a summer research experience through SPRI (the Summer Program for Research Interns) or RESP (the Research Experience Scholars Program). For six weeks, you’ll join research groups at university and corporate R&D labs in SC, the US, Europe, or Asia. Sounds cool, right? Learn more about our summer research opportunities!
