The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (SCGSSM) seeks an exceptional individual to serve as the Director of Accelerate and Synchronous Virtual Courses. The successful candidate will possess outstanding leadership skills and management experience, a strong background in engineering or applied science, teaching experience at the undergraduate or advanced high school level, and experience with distance/virtual education.

Accelerate Engineering provides a rigorous basic engineering education to highly motivated students during their high school years. The dual enrollment program is offered virtually across the state of South Carolina. Students who successfully complete the can earn up to 49 college credits while in high school. We are searching for a transformative STEM educator to provide management, planning, and advocacy in distributed learning and statewide partnerships. Major responsibilities of the Director of Accelerate and Synchronous Virtual Courses include the following:

  • Manage the day to day operations of the GSSM Accelerate Virtual Engineering and Synchronous Virtual Course (SVC) programs

  • Lead the expansion and oversee the subsequent growth of the SVC program, extending student access to educational opportunities across the state of SC.

  • Work collaboratively within and across divisions to establish effective systems that maximize productivity and leverage the talents of faculty and staff

  • Build and maintain partnerships with educational organizations, school districts, high schools, and higher education partners to ensure alignment and relevance of GSSM Virtual programs and services.

  • Manage programming, coordinating allocations to maximize student opportunities with available resources.

  • Use data including student enrollment, district needs, and trends in STEM to make decisions about course offerings for the SVC program.

  • Develop and maintain an ongoing program of accountability and effectiveness through collaborative leadership with Vice Presidents, Directors, and Deans.

  • Teach one virtual course per semester and/or engage in curriculum development according to the programmatic need.

  • Work with the Sr. Vice President for Virtual and Outreach and other administrators to manage resources and aligning activities with strategic goals.

The successful candidate should have an advanced degree in Engineering or applied science, with five or more years of experience in both teaching and administration and 2 years of virtual teaching experience. He/she should be able to interact well with the public, ranging from students, parents, and school personnel to university faculty and administrators, elected officials and industry personnel. Vision, leadership, initiative and excellent communication skills are essential to this position.

This position is a 12 month, full-time State of South Carolina position with full benefits. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Start date is July 1, 2019.
