English literature and composition teachers play a critical role at GSSM and we are looking for talented English faculty who are passionate about their work and dedicated to helping their students grow as thinkers, writers, and communicators. We know that a great STEM curriculum requires strong humanities programs. Our goal is to provide our students with a humanities curriculum that is second to none.

Experience of Applicants:  The successful applicant must be able to teach AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition as well as special topics courses and have experience teaching process-oriented, recursive writing at the university, college, or advanced high school level. We welcome applications from candidates with specialization or teaching experience in rhetoric and composition, British literature, creative writing (poetry), global and/or multi-ethnic literature, or comparative literature. All teachers are encouraged to develop interdisciplinary courses as well as classes taught within a directed studies environment. GSSM classes are taught in a traditional class settings and virtual modalities. Experience and comfort in both is a plus. Demonstrated desire to work collegially to create unique and innovative experiences for the students served is a must. An understanding of gifted learners, an enthusiasm for teaching motivated and talented high-school-aged students, and knowledge of state of the art pedagogy are necessary for teaching success at GSSM.

Education of Applicants:  The successful applicant will have a Master’s degree in English or related field. A PhD is preferred.

About GSSM: Located in Hartsville, SC, GSSM is a statewide, public residential high school for 11th and 12th graders specializing in the advanced study of science, mathematics, and engineering. Historically, GSSM has maintained a 10:1 student to faculty ratio. Over 80% of the faculty members have earned doctoral degrees in their field of specialty. Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time (10-month) permanent teaching position with full benefits available through the State of South Carolina. Salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials, experience, and unique capabilities. The position start date is August, 2019.
