The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an exceptional full-time History Instructor starting in Fall 2020 who can help advanced high school students in its residential program achieve a deeper understanding of history within and outside the United States. Candidates must possess a Master’s degree, PhD preferred, in history or a related field. Applicants should have at least two years of experience teaching US history at the college or advanced high school level. Field of expertise is open, and we welcome applications from candidates with specializations or teaching experience in interdisciplinary studies and/or regions outside the United States (e.g. Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, or Europe). Demonstrated desire to work collegially to create unique and innovative experiences for students within and outside the classroom is a must. An understanding of gifted learners, an enthusiasm for teaching motivated and talented high-school-aged students, and knowledge of effective pedagogy are necessary for teaching success at GSSM.
Courses at GSSM are modeled on college-like schedules and teaching environments. The successful candidate will teach four sections of AP US History (the current average section size is 15). The new instructor will also develop and teach upper-level courses in their areas of specialization and interest.
GSSM is a public, tuition-free residential school for 11th and 12th graders, and is recognized as among the top public high schools in the nation. GSSM includes nationally recognized residential, virtual, outreach, research, and international programs. The school maintains a 10:1 student to faculty ratio, and over 90% of faculty have PhDs in their field of instruction. A public school teaching certificate is not required. This is a full-time (10-month) teaching position, with benefits through the State of South Carolina. Salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials, experience, and unique capabilities. Committee meetings, student activity advising, and occasional evening/weekend commitments are a regular part of faculty responsibilities.
