As a public educational institution, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) upholds open and respectful dialogue while maintaining an environment appropriate for all audiences. GSSM’s social media platforms are intended to promote understanding of its missions, programs, and community accomplishments as a statewide, publicly-funded institution dedicated to advancing STEM education across South Carolina.
GSSM welcomes comments that are constructive, relevant, and contribute to the spirit of respectful discourse. However, GSSM reserves the right to moderate comments to maintain respectful and mission-aligned dialogue by hiding or removing comments that the institution deems inappropriate, disruptive, or inconsistent with the educational mission, public purpose, and community standards of the school. This includes, but is not limited to, comments that violate the guidelines listed below, misrepresent the institution or its work, or that compromise the integrity, safety, or intended purpose of our online spaces.
Comment Review Process
All public comments on GSSM social media platforms are reviewed regularly by account managers. Comments may be hidden or removed if they violate the following standards:
- Contain vulgar, obscene, or profane language
- Include personal attacks or threats against individuals or groups
- Contain discriminatory language related to race, religion, gender, ethnicity, nationality, age, disability, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or marital status
- Promote or endorse commercial products, services, or external organizations
- Contain spam, phishing attempts, or misleading links
- Violate copyright or trademark laws
- Advocate illegal activities or behaviors
- Include personally identifiable or confidential information
- Use language or references deemed inappropriate for a public educational setting
- Contain personally identifiable information about students or staff that may violate privacy laws such as FERPA, including academic records, contact information, or health-related details.
- Include inappropriate, misleading, or disruptive language that is inconsistent with the educational mission, public purpose, or community standards of the school.
- Seek to use GSSM’s social media platforms for purposes unrelated to the school's institutional or educational mission.
- Contain language that is defamatory, disparaging, or disrespectful toward the State of South Carolina, its agencies, or public officials, when such comments are inconsistent with the institution’s role as a publicly-funded, nonpartisan educational institution
