Engineering Instructor

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an exceptional Engineering instructor to teach advanced high school students. Candidates must have a Master’s degree, PhD preferred, in Engineering or a related field. A teaching certificate is not required. Position begins August, 2023.

This is a permanent, full-time (10-month) teaching position, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience.

Courses at GSSM are modeled on a college-like schedule and teaching environment. We offer courses to students in-person at our campus in Hartsville, SC, as well as virtually to students across the state of South Carolina. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach synchronous virtual or residential face-to-face courses, based on the needs of the Engineering department. Applicants are encouraged to state their work location preference in the cover letter, whether on the Hartsville campus, remotely, or no preference.

Applicants should have experience teaching Engineering at a college or advanced high school level. Engineering honors courses currently offered in our programs include Applications in Engineering Design, Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Statics, Research in MultiModal Transportation Systems, Engineering Product Design, plus three dual-enrolled courses, Engineering Disciplines and Skills, Computer Programming with MATLAB, and Engineering Design Modeling. Hands-on project-based learning is emphasized in most of the courses, and opportunities exist for the instructor to develop and teach engineering elective courses based on student interest and the instructor’s expertise.

This Engineering instructor will join a dedicated team of professionals working together to make that happen. GSSM teachers have an understanding of gifted learners, an enthusiasm for teaching driven high school students, and knowledge of effective pedagogy. Teachers share a desire to work collegially to create unique and innovative experiences for students within and outside the classroom. Committee meetings, student activity advising, and occasional evening/weekend commitments are a regular part of faculty responsibilities.
