What do major meteorological events have against Convocation?
Hurricane Michael is currently taking aim at the Florida panhandle and is forecast to bring tropical storm wind and rain to the Hartsville area on Thursday. Earlier today, GSSM President Dr. Hector Flores told parents that, for the safety of the community, Convocation would be moved up a day to Wednesday, October 10th and relocated from downtown Center Theater to the Gerald R. Malloy Activity Center on campus. This marks the second time that the celebration has been rescheduled this semester due to an approaching named storm. On September 13th, Hurricane Florence caused Convocation to be postponed to October 11th. As Hurricane Michael approaches, many communities that are home to our students are still recovering from flood and wind damage caused by Florence.
The originally scheduled Convocation date prevented Dr. Leland Cox from being on hand to accept his President Emeritus honor. The school is delighted that he, and long-serving board chair Dr. Leroy Davis, will both be here on Wednesday to be inducted into the GSSM Emeriti society. Dr. Cox will also deliver the Convocation address.
GSSM’s Convocation traditionally starts the academic year, celebrating the achievements of seniors who completed their research requirement over the summer. The faculty will honor the Class of 2019 by processing in full academic regalia. Academic letters will be given to each senior as they cross the stage individually, their names read aloud as they soon will be, again, at Graduation.
The proceedings will be live-streamed beginning at 1pm. Students will depart immediately following the ceremony's conclusion to get home ahead of the storm and start their Long Weekend.
Many thousands of people are in harm's way today as yet another major storm approaches. GSSM keeps all who are in Hurricane Michael’s path in our thoughts and close to our hearts. We hope for the safety of all as the storm passes and recovery begins.
