GSSM is continuing to monitor federal, state, and local announcements regarding COVID-19. We are gathering data and guidance from local and state officials to help us make informed decisions about delivering our annual Outreach Center STEM summer camp learning experiences. Governor Henry McMaster announced on April 22 his decision to extend the closure of all South Carolina public schools through the end of the 2019-2020 academic year. This decision will impact how we proceed with the planning and delivery of our summer STEM programs, but it does not require GSSM to cancel its summer programs at this time.
We have learned that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is currently developing guidelines for summer programs across the nation. During Governor McMaster’s press conference, there was an indication that state guidelines will also be developed. These guidelines will inform our decisions about the status of our summer STEM enrichment programs.
We understand that this is a very difficult situation for many. The health and safety of our campers, faculty, and staff must always come first. It is of GSSM’s highest priority, and we will continue to take all measures to ensure all constituents remain safe and healthy. We will send another communication as soon as GSSM comes to a decision regarding our summer STEM programs.
