Distinguished MUSC Professor & Tech Entrepreneur to Speak at Startsville’s First-Ever Knowledge Café

Startsville: GSSM Foundation’s Innovation Center is pleased to announce that John Vournakis, PhD, will be the inaugural speaker in the Knowledge Café Speaker Series, 6 p.m., November 16 at Startsville, 145 W Carolina Ave, Hartsville. 

Vournakis will share his personal academic and entrepreneurial journey as well as speak about the implications of his research and his development as a research scientist and entrepreneur.

Vournakis wears many hats. He is the vice president for research and development at Marine Polymer Technologies, Inc. and Adumne Therapeutics, LLC, and a professor of medicine and associate director of the Center for Molecular & Structural Biology at MUSC. He is also a successful entrepreneur. 

His current research, focused on the development of medical products from marine polysaccharides, has resulted in several FDA and CE cleared products for the treatment of bleeding and is the basis for the development of a drug delivery system for the treatment of cancer.

Vournakis has published more than 150 scholarly works, is a regular reviewer of grant applications for federal agencies, and has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. He holds 25 domestic and foreign patents.

Startsville’s Knowledge Café speaker series is a chance for the Hartsville community to learn from emerging technology experts from across the state and beyond.
