The South Carolina Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce Dr. Josh Cooper, professor and chief data scientist for BehaviorMatrix, LLC, will address students and faculty during a SmartChat speaker engagement on March 15 at 4:00 p.m. on the GSSM campus.
Cooper obtained his Bachelor of Science from MIT and PhD from UC San Diego in mathematics. He held postdoctoral research positions at New York University, Microsoft Research, the Rényi Institute, UCSD, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich.
Since 2006, he has been a professor of mathematics at the University of South Carolina, and since 2012, he has held the position of chief data scientist for BehaviorMatrix, LLC, an emotional analytics technology company near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Cooper's academic research – spanning over 40 journal articles – is largely in the area of discrete mathematics, with overlapping topics in theoretical computer science, linear/multilinear algebra, number theory and geometry. His industry work is in machine learning, big data analytics, and computational linguistics.
A program of the BlueCross BlueShield Economics & Finance Institute, the SmartChat Speaker Series is designed to enhance students' education while inspiring them through the stories and experiences of GSSM alumni, as well as the Palmetto State’s leading innovators in biology, chemistry, computer science, drama and film, economics, history, physics and writing.
