On Saturday, March 10, the Eagle Chess team traveled to Columbia to defend their 2018 championship against a determined field of challengers from across the state.
Team coach and mentor, Dr. Clyde Smith reported the results:
Today, our chess team notched an impressive victory at the state scholastic championship tourney, in which the team score is determined by the top four scores from the school. The runner-up high-school team scored 10.0 points to our 16.5.
Richard Sandvoss won clear second place in the field and the trophy as state 12th grade champion. Breckin Muzzy, Theo Pedapolu, Brian Torreon, and Travis Pence tied for third place. The score of our seniors alone (Richard, Brian, Travis, Johnny Besser and Niko Petersen) would have been 15.5. The score of our juniors alone (Breckin, Theo, Connor Miles, Danny Coble, Patricio Ortiz, and Jonathan Norris) would have been 13.5.
In other words, they flew high!
This marks the 14th state championship win for GSSM. Congratulations Team!
