The Center for Science Education and Outreach at the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) kicked off their second year of SPARK! last week.
SPARK! is an after school program offered to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in Darlington and nearby counties. With 13 different sessions offered over the span of 8 weeks and a variety of STEM focused subjects, there is plenty to keep students engaged.
Govies dedicate an hour and a half of their time each session to working with the middle school students on activities that range from creating origami and compasses to working with magnets to learn about Geometry, Physics, and more. “All in all, we hope to spark an interest or passion for advanced STEM studies and even someday STEM careers,” STEM Experiences Director Irene Middleton said. “To quote Dante, ‘a mighty flame follows a tiny spark.’ We want to offer that SPARK! for these kids.”
