On March 6, 2018, GSSM sent a small chapter of 12 students to the 2019 South Carolina Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) State Leadership Conference, held annually in North Charleston.
In total, over 1,900 students attended the conference from 84 schools across the state. Although GSSM had the smallest chapter present at the conference, it was able to accomplish much with only a month of preparation.
GSSM Junior Dhruvi Patel campaigned successfully and was elected as SC State HOSA Parliamentarian and will serve as a representative of South Carolina at the HOSA International Leadership Conference held in Orlando, Florida.
In the event of Behavioral Health, Layne Scopano placed 2nd and will go on to compete as a finalist at the International Leadership Conference.
Placing top 5 in their events are Vaishnavi Kanduri in Prepared Speaking, Rayed Hamid in Medical Math, and the group of Liza Malcolm and Aimee Ahuja in CPR/First Aid.
A special thanks to Dr. Bhuvana Parameswaran and Dr. Cathy Thomas, who organized funds and provided materials to many of the competitors, and to RLC Austin Powell, who served as an excellent advisor at SLC and provided for many of the students there.
The GSSM community is very proud of its HOSA chapter and looks forward to many more accomplishments in the future.
