The South Carolina Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce that Dr. Errol Fields, GSSM class of 1994 and assistant professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will address the student body during the School’s first SmartChat speaker engagement of the academic year. His presentation will take place at 12:45 p.m. on September 30 on the GSSM campus in Hartsville, SC.
After graduating from GSSM, Fields attended Harvard College where he completed a BA in Biology. Following that, he held internships at the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and went on to work for a health policy consulting firm. Fields began dedicated training in social behavioral research and public health while completing a Master’s in Public Health in sociomedical sciences at Columbia University, New York.
He was accepted into the Medical Scientist Training Program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where he earned a medical degree and a PhD in social behavioral science and public health. He completed his pediatric residency training at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center, as well as a post-graduate research fellowship in Racial Health Disparities at Harvard Medical School. He returned to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to complete his subspecialty training in Adolescent Medicine.
Fields now serves as assistant professor of pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Johns Hopkins, with a joint appointment to both the medical school and the school of public health. In June 2015, he was awarded GSSM’s Outstanding Alumnus Award.
Fields will share lessons learned from growing up in rural South Carolina and pursuing an education in the Ivy League, along with insights about his passion for improving the health and life potential of vulnerable and marginalized youth.
"The BlueCross BlueShield Economics & Finance Institute is pleased to bring entrepreneurial leaders to the GSSM campus – like our alumnus, physician-researcher Dr. Errol Fields – who are using their unique gifts and perspectives to help others while also changing our world,” said Robert Fletcher, founding director of the Institute.
A program of the BCBS Economics & Finance Institute, the SmartChat Speaker Series is designed to enhance students' education while inspiring them through the stories and experiences of GSSM alumni, as well as the Palmetto State’s leading innovators in biology, chemistry, computer science, drama and film, economics, history, physics and writing.
