GSSM is a two-year, public, residential high school for students talented in and passionate about science and math. Our students are some of the most advanced and motivated juniors and seniors in the state. Because of the outstanding education the students receive, there is a competitive application process, which ensures a highly qualified and diverse student body. All graduates attend college, and nearly 80% of alumni pursue post-graduate or professional degrees. A wide variety of college-level courses are offered in science, mathematics, economics and engineering, with an equally strong complement of humanities offerings. Nearly 260 students are currently in residence, with plans to grow to 288, and various outreach programs, including a college-level engineering program, reach nearly 5,000 students each year. The school is fully funded by the State of South Carolina.
The presidency requires an advanced degree, preferably in science, engineering or mathematics, with a terminal degree preferred. Five years’ experience in a senior leadership position is required, with both academic and business experience preferred. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to provide visionary leadership to senior academics in a collegial and participative manner. In addition to an understanding of science, he or she should have a sound understanding of the executive functions supporting the president, including finance, marketing, operations, human resources, community outreach and education. The new president must interact effectively with people from all walks of life, from the Governor, members of the General Assembly, and college presidents to faculty, students, parents and the public at large.
Founded in 1988 under the leadership of former Governor Carroll Campbell and Charles W. Coker, then president of Sonoco Products Company, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics is an innovative high school for academically motivated juniors and seniors pursing studies in science, technology, engineering and math. The School, located in Hartsville, South Carolina, moved into a new, state of the art building in 2003 and in 2010, two new wings were added: the Academic Center and the Student Activities Center.
