GSSM Expands CREATEng Camp Statewide

March 25, 2015

The Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is now accepting applications for CREATEng, GSSM’s summer day camp for rising 8th and 9th graders in Aiken, the Lowcountry, the Upstate and Orangeburg.

CREATEng is a one-of-a-kind, four-day immersion into engineering and design-based thinking for rising 8th and 9th graders. Working in teams, students will engage in a problem-based curriculum where they apply principles of engineering design to solve daily challenges.

Students can expect to compete in team-based, hands-on challenges such as designing blades for a wind turbine, cleaning up from an oil spill, developing a solar-powered s’mores cooker, or constructing a parachute. They will get the opportunity to interact with engineers on-site and during field trips. Students will learn innovative thinking techniques to solve practical problems while developing engineering skills.

Acceptance to the CREATEng program is based on academic achievement. Rising 8th and 9th graders who have demonstrated scholarship in science, math, technology or engineering, and desire an academically challenging experience are strong candidates.

CREATEng is sponsored by 3M, Alcoa Foundation, Anonymous, BAE Systems, Bridgestone, BMW, The Boeing Company, CPM Federal Credit Union, The Graham Foundation, Michelin North America, Inc., Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, SC Department of Commerce, Time Warner Cable, and Vulcan Materials Company.
