Hartsville, SC – The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) Center for Science Education & Outreach will host a STEM Professional Development Training sponsored by PBS’ SciGirls CONNECT on Friday, October 6, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
“Bringing SciGirls to GSSM is an excellent way to develop a network of SC educators and STEM professionals to help increase the number of girls in STEM,” said LaChanda Hare, GSSM Outreach Instructor and Program Coordinator. “The workshop includes a plethora of hands-on ready-to-go STEM activities that can be easily implemented into classroom instruction. Hopefully, this opportunity will spark creativity and innovation statewide to support girls in STEM.”
SciGirls is an Emmy award-winning PBS Kids television show, website, and educational outreach program that draws on cutting-edge research about what engages girls in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning and careers.
This workshop is a part of SciGirls CONNECT, a broad national outreach effort to encourage educators, both formal and informal, to adopt new, research-based strategies to engage girls in STEM.
“GSSM is excited to partner with SciGirls to host this professional development experience at GSSM,” said Randy LaCross, GSSM’s VP for Outreach & Research. “We know the SciGirls Connect facilitators will teach educators from our school district partners strategies that will improve how they engage girls in STEM academic experiences.”
GSSM’s Center for Science Education & Outreach is a statewide resource invested in hands-on, minds-on, STEM-based programming and enrichment initiatives. GSSM’s outreach efforts annually impact approximately 10,000 students and teachers statewide through a variety of unique offerings.
