GSSM Students to Present Research at 64th Annual Meeting of SHEEO Association

Columbia, SC – Four alumni and two current students from the Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) will present at the opening reception of the 64th State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) Association at 5:45 p.m., July 10, 2017, at The Mills House Wyndham Grand Hotel in downtown Charleston. Students will present their research findings and posters from the Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI). 

Co-hosted by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE), the students and alumni will share their research with nearly 200 higher education executives from across the nation.

Presenters include: Hunter Damron, GSSM Class of 2017, son of Maribeth and Greg Damron of Chester County; Abbie Bowman, GSSM Class of 2017, daughter of Stephanie Bowman Czeresko and Jim Bowman of Richland County; Isaiah Ho, GSSM Class of 2017, son of Wing Mei Lau and Chi Ming Ho of Greenville County; Brennan Cain, GSSM Class of 2017, son of Lee and Kyron Cain of York County; Danielle M. Dantzler, GSSM Class of 2018, daughter of Doris Gathers Dantzler of Orangeburg County; and Faith Emetu, GSSM Class of 2018, daughter of Lilian and Kingsley Emetu of Richland County.

For six weeks during the summer between their junior and senior years, GSSM students join research groups at university and corporate R&D labs in South Carolina, the United States, Europe or Asia. Students work with research mentors and GSSM faculty during their senior year to compile and analyze their research findings, prepare formal research papers, and present their work at the GSSM Annual Research Colloquium and at the SC Junior Academy of Science annual meeting, as well as other unique opportunities like the SHEEO Annual Meeting.

Students and alumni research was conducted in a variety of locations, including: 

  • German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence — Saarbrücken, Germany
  • Washington University School of Medicine — St. Louis, Missouri
  • Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research — Clemson, South Carolina
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology — Cambridge, Massachusetts
  • Medical University of South Carolina — Charleston, South Carolina

The SHEEO Annual Meeting is intended for the CEOs of state higher education boards and commissions in all U.S. states and territories and attracts leaders of national and regional organizations with which states work. The meeting emphasizes the discussion of key state and national higher education policy issues.
